Spring Revival!

1. Clear off and Clean out. Clutter builds-up on even the best of us. I like to change seasonal accents around my home and this forces me to conquer clutter every few months – and that prevents it from getting totally out of control – ever!
Table tops (especially the ones near doors) counter tops, kitchen island, bay windows.. wherever things tend to congregate in your house. Get it all off – and clear.
2. Now you have lots of space for a splash of Spring accents. Start some bulbs in containers you love; pottery, copper pots, ceramic bowls… it doesn’t have to have drainage holes, if you carefully place stones in the bottom. A long, shallow container planted with – of all things – just grass seed can be fun and actually kindof cool… in a Zen sort of way!
3. Get the Light Right – If you haven’t switched you switches to dimmers – now’s the time. Many designers think they’re wonderful! Bright light for work, medium for dining, dim in the evening for relaxation and gearing the family down on the way to bedtime.
4. Neaten up – Cables and Cords and Plugs; they hide behind things and in corners and multiply, don’t they! Makes me nuts. Ideas: Go underground; it is really quite easy to run a cable through a discreet hole in the floor – under your floor (in the basement or cellar) and back up emerging where you need it to. Almost everything is available in super-long lengths: printer cords, TV cables, computer line, etc. Or Hide them: also a simple deal to gently pry your base molding off, hide a line (especially thin ones like telephone line) and press it back in place. If you’re lucky, the nails don’t even come all the way out. If you have to add new finishing nails, obviously, make sure you don’t pierce thru the wire you’re hiding. Or Call in the Pros: There are many gadgets now for wrangling cables, etc.
5. Re- Fabulous your Fabrics! Very little time and money but such huge improvement! New covers for pillows, cushions, dog beds, and duvets. Fresh sets of towels and sheets… and everything looks new and vibrant for the new season.
  1. Paint something! OK, paint ANYthing! But make it a jaw-dropping spring color. The bigger your paint project, the more you’ll feel like you’re in a brand new glorious space. One accent wall is a great way to go. Whole room? even better! Not up for it? try one wicker chair or a dresser or a who-knows-what Flea Market Find. What color? Look to the garden…. my vote: Tangerine is Queen!

7. Counter Attack! Stage that kitchen like a Pro! Appliances and gadgets must get gone! Rearrange as necessary to hide them in cabinets. Adding an electrical outlet inside the cabinet helps a lot. See how the outlets above stand out? can be easily changed!   Best bang-for-your-buck? New Cabinet Hardware! Go sleek, go rustic, go fanciful. Wish you could go totally extravagant? Sell the old ones on Ebay and offset the cost!
8. If you have allergies like my family, ditch the wal-to-wall carpeting. Aren’t we kindof “over” all this carpeting? Pull it up and toss it. You may have great wood flooring under it. If not, switch to a solid surface flooring; so much easier to clean, and more hygienic, it even makes the room appear larger. Add a few throw rugs or runners…. easy and inexpensive to change as the seasons do! Happy Spring!

Don’t Fight the Bright!

~via~

After the hoopla of the Holidays is over, and the decorations are put away, what are we left with?  A house that suddenly feels bare and unwelcoming inside, and grey skies, cold and gloom outside. That’s no good folks!  Plan now for a Pick-me-up Program for your house and have what you need on-hand to smoothly transition into an uplifting new look.  With a few well-placed hints, you might get everything you need as Holiday gifts!

Color is the key… embrace it, don’t fear it!  No matter what your décor is, there’s always a bright color that can be added for that exuberant pop.  It’s like an instant face-life for the room.  Like many of my clients, I do gravitate toward neutrals often, and neutrals from top to bottom can be a wonderful thing. But, the dead of winter is not one of those times, and it’s great that a neutral décor can also serve as the “blank canvas” backdrop for whatever accent color perks up your spirit.     Because most of my clients are somewhat reserved, I have to  do some convincing to get them to upholster dining chairs in a  bold green fabric,  try a piece of red/pink furniture in their living room, or go for an indigo blue headboard.  But once they see it in context presented in a sketch I prepare, most people really “get it” and are very enthusiastic.   In addition to furniture for color splashes, I also love quirky accessories! I never overdo it, but I also never finish a room without at least one bold statement piece; if it’s a treasure that emphasizes the client’s personality or interests – even better!  You can find amazing deals for these special additions on Etsy, EBay and Overstock, but the most stunning usually come from my “to-the-trade-only” sources.   Color makes us happy and banishes Winter Blahs.  Give it a try. Don’t Fight the Bright!  Call me for back-up if you get….. cold feet!

Oo la la kids room!

What a busy time of year for me! Lots of Client Projects, High Point Market, back to school, one off to college, husband, dogs and all the rest! Sometimes delving into a customer’s project is like a Get-Away for me… that’s because I love what I do… I hope you’ll love all the adorable images below as much as I do!

Redecorating a nursery or child’s room is such fun and right now I’ve got a little boy’s room to do. As soon our first planning meeting was done, I had visions of paint swatches, fabric, and soft cozy bedding dancing in my head. The ideas really are endless! But, there is a bit of a “catch”. His Mom wants his furniture to last through college and beyond, so no strong themes like soccer or animals.

She also doesn’t want it to look like it came out of a Pottery Barn catalog (nothing wrong with PB!). So, after some research I decided to order a bookcases and a steel gray colored upholstered bed from Art For Kids. AFK is an amazing company with high quality, timeless, and beautiful pieces. I’d have NO problem living in any of these rooms.

Here is a corner of the bookshelf I’m having made and the ribbed rug I ordered yesterday!

It’s not looking too much like a kids room, but that’s what mom wants. I’ll soften the room with subtle kids art, coordinating plush bedding, a ribbed rug to add sheen and a subtle gradation of color and lots of his favorite toys (robots!) .

I haven’t decided yet on some of the finishing touches, but a chandelier and twill drapery are on the horizon. I’ll post about the installation in November/December. All the furniture shown here is from AFK.

Have a great weekend !

New Schumacher line and it is gorgeous!

Schumacher’s new INSANELY fabulous luxury wallcovering line is called “Nest”, and it’s extraordinary!!

Now, brace yourselves folks- this wall paper is completely made of real feathers attached to paper by hand.  And I’m not talking Big Bird my friends.

How amazing (as  long as no birds are injured in the making of this product)!! These photos don’t do them justice. In person, this material is textured, layered  and has beautiful sheen! Pure luxury.  If I could, I’d ware this stuff.  How much does it cost? Good question? I’m working on that,  but I’m thinking it’s up there!

The Bird trend certainly isn’t new to the design world. Look at other ways birds bring timeless beauty to a room.

There are countless ways to include birds in your home, and I am loving all forms of it!

DREAM ON

Here is some fabulous inspiration to get you dreaming…

It’s SO essential to get a good night’s sleep… every night. How your bedroom looks and feels can make or break your rest – and we spend a third of our lives there! It’s the last thing we see at night and the first thing that greets us every morning.

A good nights sleep is important! Important to your overall well-being, attitude and happiness.

Is your bedrooms living-up to this high calling at the moment?

Obviously, the bed is very much the star of the show here… and a big star, at that! And it’s crowning glory is it’s headboard. Consider a Do-Over for yours. Go big, go dramatic, go sumptuous.

Make your bedroom a glorious, peaceful joy to be in… and to dream in!

Interview with Ginger Rodriguez on selling antique/vintage furniture and accessories?

Lauren Rissmiller of Potomac West: What got you into the business of selling antique/vintage furniture and accessories?

Ginger Rodriguez of WestBay Interiors: My clients want “eccentric”, “one-of-a-kind” pieces. Maybe not the entire room, but, at least an accent piece or two. So, I am constantly hunting and searching for the “unique antique”, or the vintage treasure. It was a natural progression to begin dealing in these, in addition to my regular interior design work.

Iron Sun Mirror available 7/10

Lauren: What is your favorite piece that you have sold?

Ginger: I would have to say that my “favorite” changes – about every week! Right now, it would be a vintage piece of art I found at an auction. It’s a portrait of a woman, painted in wild, crazy colors… very amusing and energetic! And, actually, it became the Inspiration Piece for the entire room.

Lauren: Where do you typically shop for pieces?

Ginger: To do this correctly, you must circulate a lot. Sources tend to gravitate to acquiring a certain genre, or style. So, to have a mix on hand, I need to keep my eye on many dealers – all the time. I buy pieces from different places to create a look that feels like it’s been achieved over time. Last week’s major find was an interesting glass sculpture from a vintage shop in Soho NY.

Lauren: Do you enjoy the process of sourcing your inventory? Have you hired a picker or do you do it yourself?

Ginger: Oh, no…. I LOVE the Sprit of the Quest! It’s one of the most fun parts of my profession. If I happen to be over-loaded with projects, I use an assistant for the searching, but not usually. Gathering the perfect items is part of the very personal service approach that I pride myself on providing to my clients.

Pillow Sham - 15” x 30” available 7/10

Lauren: Are their certain pieces that always strike your fancy?

Ginger: In a general way, I would say yes. Big, bold colorful statement accessories with antiques tends to be what I gravitate to. There’s just nothing like the unexpected combination to create a dramatic room.

Lauren: Favorite color?

Ginger: A creamy, buttery yellow. Just enough warmth but just close enough to white – to give the fresh “sparkle” to a space and lift my mood.

Lauren: Where do you keep your excess inventory?

Ginger: When first purchased, many items “park” in my garage for a while. Then some go directly to the client, some get stored in a warehouse, some go to the new store.

Burlap curtains available now

Lauren: Does your style of merchandise reflect your personal style?

Ginger: I try to have a variety. My style tends to be a mix of eclectic items, that cover a wide range of time periods. That is a very broad category… and that is what you find in my merchandise.

Lauren: If I walked into your house, what is the first piece/element I would notice?

Ginger: Right now, that would probably be “Tulip”. She is a huge, ceramic peacock imported from Italy at my fireplace hearth. Overall, you would notice that my home feels comfortable and lived-in. Or, to be more specific… you would notice that, although it looks very stylish and pulled-together, the fabrics and furnishings can all stand-up to an actual family – actually living in the home!

Lauren: What influences your “eye”?

Ginger: New discoveries – constantly learning about different people, places and cultures. There is always something new to be excited by… this is why a LOVE doing what I do!

INSPIRED BY CURE BY DESIGN

Wow! It was a lot of work, but I am SO glad that I participated in Cure by Design, the gala fundraising event for The American Cancer Society last week.

It was held in the magnificent Ronald Reagan Building in DC… in the Atrium, which is just breath-taking!

VIP LOUNGE

I was asked to handle all of the Design and Décor of the Oculus – a circular area where the VIP Lounge was. It was a bit of a challenge, being round and also having no ceiling!

I called-in lots of favors and encountered SO much generosity from my favorite manufacturers and suppliers.

VIP LOUNGE

VIP LOUNGE

During the event, the Director of Cure By Design said she almost cried when she saw the VIP lounge as I had done it. She loved it and said in the program, ”We applaud Ginger Rodriguez at WestBay Interiors for creating the amazing decor in the VIP reception area and the place settings and thanks for your hard work and talent in making everything you touch beautiful and special!!” OK… tearing-up a bit here! SO it’s nice to have hard work appreciated!

VIP LOUNGE

VIP LOUNGE

What an event it was!

First and foremost, it was a Fashion Show and the runway models were all Cancer Survivors sporting outfits by amazing clothing designers.

In 2007 Lindsay was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma. Wearing Sondra Falk

It moved me in so many ways; men, women , and children who have seen hell and come back to THRIVE! They walked the runway beautiful, confident, inspired and wanting to help others.

Carmen graduated this year form American University with a masters in communication and producing film and video. 2009 Carmen was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Gloria was diagnosed with tongue cancer.

Having a Special Needs son, Sean, who has been through so many surgeries and procedures, I felt an extra kinship and could well relate to their medical battles. I recalled the hardships he has seen, and all the amazing family, friends, doctors, and nurses that got us through that.

In a room of strangers, I felt close to so many.

Catherine was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012.

One sweet highlight was the grandfather who out-bid anyone who bid on his seven year old grand daughter’s painting, “Life without Cancer.” This wonderful gentleman! I don’t know his name, but I remember meeting him, earlier, in the VIP lounge and him sincerely thanking me for creating it. I had no idea at that time that the depth of his appreciation for my support of the event – was rooted in his hopes that little girls like his grand daughter may someday see just what she painted…. a “Life without Cancer”.

And also, from now on, whenever I need to get into my “Sasha Fierce” strong and courageous mode I will always think of Janice Ferebee’s triumphant walk down the runway.

Janice revived the news that she had cancer in July 2011

In 2011 she learned that she had a gynecological cancer, but has no intention of being subdued by it AT ALL! As she walked the runway she victoriously , and maybe defiantly, put her hand to her head, grabbed what we did not realize was a wig… and threw it off and away! There wasn’t a dry eye in the house! She had shaved her head in honor of her sister, who died of cancer in 2005. She said she “Lives life out loud.” and she certainly does!    I LOVE that!

Janice proudly pulled off her wig! She celebrates her life as a survivor , and honers her sister who died of cancer in 2005.

Alexandra was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma. She wants to give a special thank you to her friend, Dr. Jay Greenberg, who helped save her life.

And it all comes around full-circle. The sense of being INSPIRED and UPLIFTED is something that I strive for when I design and decorate the homes, offices and shops of my clients. It was lovely to be on the receiving-end of that effect!

Thank you ALL so much for a life-changing event!

I thought I was doing it to make the event richer and more beautiful for all of you

I had no idea that you were going to make life richer and more beautiful – for me!

This adorable 2 year old, Jaylen, was diagnosed with Mesoblastic Nephroma in November 2009.

What a lovely event!
